The One Health Approach: Humans and the Environment

Description

This course explores the relationship people have with their environment, the risk management choices made, and the resulting associations that affect health and physical well-being for the individual, communities and susceptible populations. Everyone is affected by environmental health principles and topical areas of concern every day; we all eat, drink, produce waste, and breathe air each day. This course delivers important information and resources for the students' own health and wellness advocacy as they move out beyond this institution.

The course also emphasizes a “One Health” approach to environmental and occupational health issues that considers the ecological relationships between human, animal, and environmental health. The course examines a representative sample of environmental hazards and major environmental events and media, with comparative local and global case through problem solving approach.

Course Objectives

  • Describe and discuss foundational concepts and strategies of one health framework; their relationship to public health practice, and draw generalizable conclusions about how they apply in different situations.

  • Communicate information in plain language (orally and in writing) to a target audience about environmental health risks, influential factors, and prevention strategies; and anticipate or identify risk perceptions and relevant concerns in the target audience

  • Perform effectively on teams and in different team roles; promote collegiality, inclusion and trust; and apply ethical principles to the learning experience

Lecture, discussions, and media viewing, among others.

Assessment Method

  • Participation/ Some Good News Assignment (media representation) (15%) - Students are expected to bring one current media item related to theme of the course to class to present, critique, and collectively discuss. Weekly presentations from Week 2 to Week 7.

  • Mid term (25%), week 4.

  • Group project - Communicating science through “unessay” project (30%) - emphasis on this assignment is harnessing skills to effectively and concisely communicate complex topics in health to the general public. Week 7.

  • Final exam (30%), Week 8.

Registration

Courses offered at Leiden University College (LUC) are usually only open to LUC students and LUC exchange students. Leiden University students who participate in one of the university’s Honours tracks or programmes may register for one LUC course, if availability permits.
