Description

Metabolomics has become an important metabolic profiling tool in life sciences, including studies of metabolic profiling, functional genomics, uncovering biological and physiological phenomenon in chemistry, and interaction between organisms. This course will cover basic natural product chemistry, analytical platforms for metabolomics (NMR, Chromatography, Mass Spectrometry), data interpretation with Multivariate Data Analysis, and example of application of metabolomics to life science. There are three parts of the course: 1) theoretical with the lectures given by international lecturers, 2) practice to learn a workflow of metabolomics and data mining, 3) warp-up: identification of metabolites by spectroscopic data.

Learning goals

At the end of the course students are able to:
1) Describe and explain the concept of metabolomics and compred with that of conventional metabolic studies.
2) Recognize the source of natural products and their characteristics in metabolome.
3) Understand the role of metabolomics in systems biology.
4) Understand the basic of analytical platforms used in metabolomics.
5) Describe the basic of data processing for statistics and multivariate data analysis.
6) Understand the basic of multivariate data analysis in metabolomics.
7) Describe and explain general separation and isolation steps in metabolomics.
8) Describe the integration of analytical data for metabolomics.
9) Recognize primary and secondary metabolites of natural products.
10) Recognize chemical characteristics of primary metabolites.

Timetable

1 week for theory, 1 week for practice, 1 week for wrap-up course for structure elucidation, 1 week for self-study, exam.
3 April 2023 until 21 Apr 2023

Mode of instruction

Lectures, practice, reading of articles

Assessment method

Written examination (date will be decided during the course)
The final grade is based on:

  • Written exam, to cover all the lectures : 70%

  • Attendance: 30%
The minimum grade is 6 out of 10.

Inspection and feedback on the examination

To be determined later.

Remarks

This course is a part of an international workshop (Metabolomics Workshop) organized by Y.H. Choi and R. Verpoorte since 2008. The participants will join together with international participants. For the lectures of metabolomics, 8-10 international guest lecturers will be invited. There is limitation of place for the students of Leiden University (ca. 20 places are available). The course will take place in Pieterskerkhof 6, Leiden (for lectures in the first week) but the other practice and wrap-up courses in the 2nd and 3rd week will be a room in sylvisus building.
