Water-Energy-Food Nexus

Course
2022-2023

Admission requirements

Required course(s):

  • Global Challenges: Sustainability

Description

Sustainability challenges related to water, energy, and food are interconnected within social-ecological systems. For instance, the availability and accessibility of water and energy influence people’s livelihoods and their ability to secure food and nutrition. In this course, students will learn about the nexus approach for analyzing the interconnections between water, energy, and food production. A central focus of this course are livelihoods, which are considered key to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. This course will explore how the water-energy-food nexus influence livelihoods, and how sustainable livelihoods can promote sustainability in the water, energy, and food sectors. The course will provide students with an overview of the nexus approach and the livelihoods approach to provide the conceptual foundations. It will then introduce the concept of environmental livelihood security to explore how water, energy, and food securities can be synergistic with sustainable livelihoods. In practical terms, the students will learn how to think in systems and identify connections between sectors. They will learn how to apply the nexus approach with explicit attention to how sustainable livelihoods can be promoted.

Course Objectives

At the end of the course, students shall have acquired the knowledge and skills identified below.

Knowledge:

  • Describe the water-energy-food nexus and identify the strengths and limitations of the approach;

  • Describe the livelihoods approach and identify its strengths and limitations; and

  • Synthesize how the concept of environmental livelihoods security bridges the nexus and livelihoods approaches.

Skills:

  • Critically examine studies applying the water-energy-food nexus approach and assess whether livelihood concerns and goals are integrated;

  • Identify knowledge gaps which result from the omission of livelihoods;

  • Apply the concept of environmental livelihoods security in a case study.
