This course is part of the minor Violence Studies, which falls under the interdisciplinary programme Social Resilience and Security, and is also available as an elective. This is an interdisciplinary minor, and as such it is suitable for students from a variety of social science disciplines, including security studies, law, criminology, psychology, child studies, and related subjects. Description
In this course, we will focus on offenders and victims of interpersonal violence. In doing so, we address the main subtypes of violence, and zoom in on the most important causes and correlates of interpersonal violence. Students will become acquainted with theoretical perspectives that can help explain interpersonal violence, as well as how to research interpersonal violence. These perspectives will be discussed in the lectures using current events, making use of Podcasts and video materials, and through interactive exercises.
Course objectives
At the end of this course, students are able to: · Understand the main theoretical approaches to explain interpersonal violence; · Identify the practices in researching offenders and victims of interpersonal violence; · Identify and analyze the main subtypes of violent offending and victimization; · Apply theoretical perspectives to current affairs involving interpersonal violence; · Present their findings in an academic and professional way.

13 lectures, including guest lectures.
Total study load for 10 ECTS = 280 hours:

3 hrs exam
249 hrs self-study: reading, preparing lectures, working on assignments, revision for the exam, etc.
