  • World Archaeology 1.1 and Material Studies 1 obtained;

  • This is a seminar with a limited number of participants (20 students), for Archaeology students exclusively;

  • BA3 students who want to take this course: please contact the Administration Office. You can only be admitted if there are spots left, BA2 students will have priority.

Description

This course provides a case study in Paleolithic archaeology as well as hands-on, practical experience with Paleolithic stone tools.
The case study will focus on one theme or topic, e.g. Neanderthal subsistence, hunter-gatherer mobility strategies, etc. We will discuss the theoretical background (e.g. human behavioral ecology), and aspects such as lithic technology, subsistence, site formation and chronology. During the tutorials, we will study archaeological materials as well as other exercises.

The course is designed for students with an interest in human origins.

Weekly 4-hour seminars/practicals.

Course objectives

After the course, students have knowledge of:

  • The main subdivisions of the Paleolithic and its archaeological record;

  • The main processes of the formation of the Paleolithic record;

  • One of the key-themes in Paleolithic archaeology.

Students are able to:

  • Analyse a scientific paper on a paleolithic topic.

Mode of instruction

  • Weekly tutorials of two hours, including short lectures and student presentations;

  • Practicals of two hours;

  • Assignments.

Assessment method

  • Portfolio (individual) (75%);

  • Presentation(s) (25%).

Compensation is possible in accordance with regulations (Onderwijs- en Examen Reglement / Course and Examination Regulations).
The retake consists of improving the portfolio to the ‘pass’ level and/or a new presentation.

Registration

Registration start dates for the BA2 seminars differ from the registration dates of the regular courses.

Registration will take place with the use of forms. These will be e-mailed by the study advisers to all BA2 students and pre-master students at the beginning of January 2024.

The Administration Office will register all Archaeology BA2 students in uSis for their seminar exams. However, confirmation of these exams in MyStudymap is mandatory. No confirmation = no participation!
