Methods of Qualitative Research


Admission requirements

There are no specific admission criteria. But, in view of the final attainment levels envisaged, minors are most suitable for third-year bachelor's students.


The course familiarises students with different research methods such as as participant observation, in-depth interviews, visual research methods and online ethnography. Weekly practical assignments serve as a step-by-step preparation for the students’ own research projects. During the module “Research Design”, students learn to formulate their own research projects and write a coherent and feasible research proposal: formulating a research question, planning the research, using theories and concepts, relating their research to existing knowledge.

  • Acquiring qualitative research methods skills.

  • Learning how to design and plan a research project.

  • Developing critical understanding of the relevant body of literature.

  • Developing generic skills, including research, analysis, critical thinking and oral presentation skills.

Academic Integrity

Students are expected to be familiar with Leiden University policies on plagiarism
and academic integrity.
Plagiarism will not be tolerated. It is assumed that students' work is their own work with all sources used properly indicated and documented in the text (with quotations and/or citations). Students may not substantially reuse any work they have previously submitted in this or other courses. Minor overlap with previous work is allowed as long as it is duly noted in citation.
Assignment(s) must be submitted to Brightspace through Turnitin, so they can be checked for plagiarism. Submission via email is not accepted.

The final mark for the course is established by determining the weighted average.

  • Practical assignments: 40%

  • Research proposal: 40%

  • Participation: 20%


If the final grade is below 5.5, the students have to revise the research proposal based on feedback.

Exam review

If a student requests a review within 30 days after publication of the exam results, an exam review will be organized.
