Description
Health and well-being are not equally distributed within society and health conveys different meanings for different individuals and social groups. In this module we will dive into the ways in which people experience and give meaning to health and illness and discuss how access to health is related to social inequalities. Students will gain insight into medical anthropological/sociological theory and they will acquire practical skills, such as conducting and analyzing interviews, and participatory observation to understand the meaning and dynamics of a healthy society.
Course Objectives
Students will:
Gain insight into social scientific approaches to health and illness
Be able to challenge presumptions about the meaning of health and illness
Gain understanding of the unequal social distribution of health and illness
Acquire qualitative research and analysis skills
Improve discussion skills

The Institute of Psychology uses fixed rules for grade calculation and compulsory attendance. It also follows the policy of the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences to systematically check student papers for plagiarism with the help of software. Disciplinary measures will be taken when fraud is detected. Students are expected to be familiar with and understand the implications of these three policies.

This course uses BrightSpace. Students receive a syllabus with all practical information about the minor programme. Course specific information, such as literature and online resources, will be provided by the course coordinators.

This course is only open to students of the Minor Dynamics of a Healthy Society. It is only possible to register for the full minor, not for individual courses. Registration for the minor takes place through eduXchange.
