Human-Robot Interaction

Course
2023-2024

Admission Requirements

Introduction to Programming (course).

Without having passed this course, participation is not possible.

Description

Robots and other intelligent agents are playing an increasingly larger role in our society. They help children at school, they greet you at the airport or restaurant. They assist children and the elderly in times of illness. Some even serve as companions. But how do you actually program human-robot interaction (HRI)? How do you ensure a pleasant dialogue? How do you respond to a human? How do you measure what a human thinks, and how do you do it in a smart way so that the human doesn't find it annoying? You also need to be able to deal with many different AI techniques, all of which are not perfect. For example, if the robot hears a wrong answer... what do you do then? In this course, you will learn how to shape and program the interaction between humans and humanoid robots by making smart use of AI techniques, and how to test it by conducting an experiment with test subjects.

Recommended prior knowledge:

  • Human cognition (Course: Cognitive Science)

  • Software development, Python, (Course: Introduction to programming)

Registration

Starting from the academic year 2022-2023, you as a student are responsible for enrolling in a timely manner, which means 14 or 28 days before the start of the course. You can do this via MyStudymap. You need to do this twice a year: once for the courses you want to take in semester 1 and once for the courses you want to take in semester 2.

Enrollment for courses in the first semester is possible from July; enrollment for courses in the second semester is possible from December. For more information, see this page (tab Mathematics and Natural Sciences).

Please note that it is compulsory to register for every exam and retake. Not being registered for a course means that you are not allowed to participate in the final exam of the course.
