The mentoring sessions are a compulsory part of the first year (propaedeuse) in English Language and Culture.
Description
The first-year BA English mentor programme consists of various types of meetings, the focus of which is to teach you different aspects of effective study. The topics covered include etiquette, why you should read the course descriptions and how to give constructive feedback in course evaluations. In addition, you are introduced to Leiden University Libraries and may be given information about the future job market.
All full-time BA students of English must attend the scheduled mentor meetings.
Course objectives
By the end of the mentor program students will have:
received practical information on the degree programme;
learned about effective study and exam preparation;
been introduced to various facilities (University Library, Brightspace, uSis);
learned how to use the various facilities;
learned how to give constructive feedback;
learned how to avoid plagiarism and fraud;
received some information on the job market.

Mode of instruction
Study supervision in one- and two-hour seminars.
The staff mentors will hold specific office hours for first-year students in the first semester; in the second semester first-year students can make an appointment via email with the staff mentors to discuss anything related to their studies.

The coordinator of studies assigns you to one of the mentor groups during the introductory day for first-year students.
