Arts and politics in Latin America

Course
2023-2024

Admission requirements

Description

This course deals with the relationship between cultural expressions - in particular art, literature and film - and politics as well as the different forms of violence in society in Latin America. How do these expressions relate to what is happening in society? Violence can be systemic or subjective, economic or symbolic, political or social. How to understand the Latin American link between economics and violence? Spanish-American texts, urban art, photography, representations and films respond to political events in different ways. For example, it is about how you can find meaning between, for example, the violence of economic and political power and the power of images. For example, we look at the representations that respond in the present to the legacy and memory of the dictatorships in Chile, Argentina, Uruguay or Guatemala. We examine the description of class violence in a Mexican film and the violence of oblivion in an Argentine film. The ultimate aim of this course is to address the relationship between art/film and literature and Latin American politics in a more complex and multifaceted way.
