BA students in Philosophy: Global and Comparative Perspectives
Pre-master’s students in Philosophy who are in possession of an admission statement, and for whom this course is part of their programme.
Description
ThThis course will introduce students to the philosophical traditions in China through a selection of major thinkers and texts throughout China’s intellectual history, from the foundational pre-Qin “masters” to the post-Qin developments including the introduction of Buddhism and the Song-Ming Neo-Confucianism, concluding in the engagements with thoughts from the Western world. Students will explore the diversity among and within various thinkers and schools of thoughts across time in their emphases and approaches to both the philosophical legacies before them and the socio-political situations they faced in their life.
Course objectives
This course aims to (1) introduce students to the diversity and evolution of the concepts and questions that concerned the major thinkers and texts in the history of China and (2) train them to both understand and critically reflect upon the positions found in the materials.
Students who successfully complete the course will have a good understanding of:
the life and socio-historical background of the selected thinkers and texts;
the content and philosophical framework of the selected thinkers and texts;
the key concepts and questions and their evolution in the intellectual history of China.

Weighting
The final mark for the course is established by determination of the weighted average of the two subtests:
Midterm written exam (50%)

Resit
The resit consists of a written examination and covers the final exam only. The resit grade will overwrite both midterm and final exams and be the final mark for the resit taker.
Inspection and feedback
How and when an exam review will take place will be disclosed together with the publication of the exam results at the latest. If a student requests a review within 30 days after publication of the exam results, an exam review will have to be organized.

Detailed course syllabus and weekly reading materials will be made available via Brightspace and/or others means specified in class. Students are not required to purchase the materials.
