About this course
Is an exhibition a mere platform for presenting an artwork or is it an intrinsic part of the creative process?
Where lies the difference and what are the implications of these different positions for the research process
of artists and designers? How do various curatorial roles relate to notions of artistic autonomy? Why do
artists and designers make exhibitions anyway?
This interdisciplinary course offers students practical and theoretical knowledge and understanding of
exhibition-making in general and of the potentialities of exhibition-making in relation to their own creative
practice in particular. The exhibition(s) will take place in various spaces at The Royal Academy of Art (such
as galleries, presentation and project spaces, corridors, courtyards and studio spaces) and possibly outside
the academy. Special attention will be given to the possibilities of artistic innovation based on rhizome - a
non-binary concept of Deleuze and Guattari, as well as research methods essential to contemporary
exhibition-making.
Art & Design students have an opportunity to:
Make, curate and show new work in any technique and discipline
Critically reflect on this process as well as investigate the possibilities of an exhibition as a
framework for research, experiment and (re)presentation in a small group of peers from various
KABK departments and Leiden University.Expand portfolio and prepare for (graduation) show.
Work with any equipment from KABK rental free of charge.
Leiden University students have an opportunity to:
Work closely together with creative makers and get a unique understanding of creative processes and
research methods.Research and practice theory, curating and writing exhibition texts.
Critically reflect and investigate the possibilities of an exhibition as a framework for research,
experiment and (re)presentationWork with any equipment from KABK rental free of charge.
Course objectives
Collaboration, experimentation and individuality:
During this course, participating students will make an (online and/or offline) exhibition(s) together.
According to their individual preferences and group dynamics, students can choose to make:
a group exhibition and/or
solo exhibitions and/or
duo-collaborations and/or
online exhibitions

Assessment method
Possible outcomes for students:
Knowledge in context
You are expected to read selected texts and artists’ statements in preparation for the first two course
sessions and to prepare a brief presentation on a topic related to the history and theory of exhibitionmaking.
Research
Your individual research and experimentation with making and installing work in presentation spaces at the
KABK will result in exhibition(s) which will be open to the public.
Exhibition-making and curating
You will host the exhibition opening and participate in a one-hour collective artist talk/discussion moderated
by an invited respondent (curator or artist). Articulate you artistic, visual and theoretical points of departure,
and get hands-on experience in making exhibitions.
Articulating (verbally and in writing)
To wrap up, LU students will be invited to write a text about the work of one or more of the participating
art students in connection with the insights gained in the course. KABK students will be asked to document
and reflect on their process by keeping a visual diary, and by writing a short reflection paper (750-1.000
words; for example: a position statement, essay or performance text).

Participants will be selected on the basis of their motivated application.
For KABK students: Apply in OSIRIS by registering and uploading a brief letter of motivation (max. 300
words or 1A4) plus a few images of artworks and/or designs in OSIRIS.For Leiden University students: register in uSis before (date and time TBA) and send motivation to

Remarks
About tutor
Tatjana Macić (she/her) is a visual artist and researcher. She works in a variety of media such as lectureperformances,
installations, artistic archives, collages and artist’ books. Her work is shown at the Tate
Modern, the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, the Venice Biennale Collateral Events, W139, The Wrong
Biennale, KunstVlaai and de Appel. Tatjana received a BFA from ArtEZ Institute of the Arts, and an MFA with
honours in Theory and History of Contemporary Art from the University of Amsterdam. where she wrote a
thesis about curating, politics and innovation. She founded Leftover initiative for research into the politics
of sustainability of exhibition-making; and is currently a teacher of Artistic Research at the KABK.
