Advanced topics in Indo-European Morphology: Verb

Course
2023-2024

Admission requirements

A solid basis in Indo-European historical grammar, as shown for example by having successfully completed the BA track Comparative Indo-European Linguistics.

Description

The reconstruction of the Indo-European verb is much debated: the verbal systems of the Indo-European languages differ greatly, and scholars have proposed various, often very different models to account for these. In this course, we will investigate selected topics of the reconstruction of the Proto-Indo-European verb taking into account issues of methodology and the scholarly debate. Among the questions to be addressed are the following:
Which tenses and moods must be reconstructed for the proto-language?
How do the tenses relate to each other?
How many sets of endings can be reconstructed?
How old is the augment?
Can the Anatolian and Tocharian verbal systems be derived from the Graeco-Aryan verbal system?

Course objectives

After this course, students are able to

  • apply the methods of historical linguistics to complex problems of the reconstruction of Proto-Indo-European verbal morphology;

  • clearly represent, both orally and in writing, arguments for and against selected reconstructions of the Proto-Indo-European verb;

  • critically engage with the scholarly literature on the Indo-European verb.
