Admission to the Master Classics and Ancient Civilizations
Description
This elective is a unique chance to read at least a part of whatever you had always hoped to read from Greek and Latin literature.
In consultation with the instructor, the student will compose a motivated individual reading list of Greek and/or Latin texts, with the help of the OIKOS reading lists (https://www.rug.nl/research/research-let/oikos/education/rema-and-phd-curriculum?lang=en#reading-list). Texts previously studied for credit are not admissible. It is possible to study a (small) part of the chosen reading list in translation. Students must study the texts independently with the help of the usual scholarly tools (commentaries, grammars, dictionaries, translations). The expected average reading pace is 1 page in the Oxford Classical Texts (OCT) edition per hour, or 25 verses of poetry; this includes consultation of a commentary. The total amount of reading can be adjusted if the average difficulty level of the chosen texts or commentaries is high. Texts marked with * on the reading list are of particular interest to students with philosophical interests; texts marked with ** are of particular interest to ancient historians.
Course objectives
The student is able to:
-compose a motivated individual reading list from the available Greek and Latin literature;
-to read and interpret the selected text independently, with the help of the usual scholarly tools—more specifically on the basis of:
translation competence
knowledge of grammar (morphology, syntax) and verse form
reading comprehension
insight in the historical and cultural context of the texts
critical use of commentaries
production of own interpretations in motivated dialogue with the commentaries
reflection on the role of the reading list in own academic development

Assessment method
Oral examination: the student will be set two or three text passages from the self-selected reading list and get the opportunity to prepare; the student translates (parts of) the passage aloud en answers questions on language, form, content, context, and interpretation, demonstrating familiarity with the relevant commentaries.
For the examination an individual appointment is made with Prof. Ineke Sluiter. The last possible exam date is 29 January 2024.
