Admission requirements

JRP-1 has successfully been completed and the report has been handed in via Kl-app. The courses Strategy and Technology, Marketing Science , Strategic Financial management and Operations management (or equivalent, see OER master BMS) have successfully been completed. Furthermore, the course How to write a research proposal has successfully been completed and the internship proposal (312300100Y) for JRP-II Management has also been handed in via Kl-app.

Description

The number of ECTS will be between 26.0-42.0.
As a biomedical sciences student you have been trained to develop analytical skills, the attitude for problem solving and the ability to learn fast as well as to apply creative thinking. This rather unique skill set is necessary to become a good researcher. At the same time, these qualifications are also valuable for industry and business. Many companies are looking for graduates who will be able to fulfil challenging jobs requiring the above mentioned skills. The management internship enables you to combine your biomedical background with newly acquired business skills and to become acquainted with a career outside research. It represents an opportunity to use and advance your knowledge and skills in a business context. Over the course of the internship you will become familiar with subject matter expertise and competencies required to be successful in a particular industry- or functional- domain. During the internship, you will also attend a minimum of three (online) management sessions as part of the (peer) support during your internship. The management sessions are organised by BMS management.

Course objectives

The objectives of the internship will be defined in the internship proposal written prior to the start of the internship (see guidelines proposal on Brightspace). While the specific objectives for the internship are different for each project, the objectives of an internship will be defined across the following interlinked domains:

  • Execution of (a) project(s) at an academic level within a company or organisation – i.e. definition of deliverables and milestones.

  • Subject matter expertise – i.e. what is the subject matter expertise that students will make their own during the internship?

  • Personal skills development – i.e. which are the skills that students will develop to successfully complete the internship?

At the end of the internship students have learned to execute one or more projects at a company or organisation, to write a report thereof at the academic master’s level and to formally present their results to their team. In both practical work, writing and presenting students:

  • gain advanced knowledge and understanding of subject-specific aspects of the business project;

  • acquire, extend and integrate knowledge and understanding independently for their own project;

  • contribute to solving problem(s) in new or unfamiliar environments;

  • plan and execute a business project within a (non)-profit organisation, connected to the biomedical domain;

  • work independently on a business project in order to show overall control of their project and assess how their project can contribute to the business domain;

  • clearly communicate conclusions, and the knowledge and rationale underlying these conclusions, to specialists and non-specialist audiences;

  • reflect on their own actions as well as on the actions and judgements of others, and assimilate these to improve their own product, approach and conduct;

  • make a conscious choice in favor of a possible further specialist training or a position in the job market.

Mode of instruction

Management internship; At the end of the internship, students must present and document their results both in a written report and by an oral presentation for the department/company. Following the internship, students will also present their results in an oral presentation to a lay audience during the graduation ceremony.

Assessment method

Students are assessed on the following aspects:

  • Project activities (knowledge level and development, analytical skills, communication, work quality, work attitude, organizational, skills, teamwork)

  • Written report (content; writing skills)

  • Oral presentation (content/structure, presentation skills)

  • Value added to the organization

  • Personal development and reflection

Twelve weeks after the internship has begun, the supervisor fills in the midterm assessment form and discusses this with the student (formative assessment). Together they define the students’ strong points and points for improvement. The student also provides feedback to the supervisor. The midterm assessment form is based on the final assessment form and discusses the project activities. During the midterm visit, midterm assessment and progress are discussed by supervisor and student with the BMS coordinator M,E,C,H specialisations. Remarks

  • Guidelines for a successful internship are provided on Brightspace and Kl-app.

  • JRP-II Management needs to be approved beforehand by the Master’s Internship Committee. Therefore, please mail a draft of your project proposal to the BMS coordinator M,E,C,H specialisations at least two weeks before the foreseen start of your project. After approval, you can upload your final proposal in Kl-app. JRP-II Management is subject to the Procedures Training Periods/Research Projects. These regulations require detailed written agreements in the application form between supervisor and student, that specify the conditions for the Project. Please consult these regulations beforehand through LUMC’s educational webpages (or Brightspace) and act accordingly.

  • Monthly updates are send to the BMS coordinator M,E,C,H specialisations, who acts as an internal supervisor.
