Mathematics and Physics on Dutch high school VWO level

Description

This course deals with the elements of differential and integral calculus of functions of one variable. The aim of the course is to familiarise students with the basic concepts of the theory and to provide them with some useful background for applications in phyics/astronomy and other areas of mathematics.

Course Objectives

After finishing this course you have an operational knowledge of the following concepts and you are able to make (simple) problems concerning the following subjects:

• Complex numbers

• Polynomial equations

• Limits

• Continuity and differentiability

• Lineair approximations of functions

• Taylor polynomials

• Order symbols (small o- and big-O-notation)

• Integration techniques and applications

• Differential equations (separable DE and linear DE with constant coefficients)

• Convergence of sequences and series, esp. power series/Taylor series

Transferable Skills

• Further training in general mathematics skills

• Learning to write down a conclusion in a clear and precise way.

Assessment Method

• Written exam with open questions

• (optional) homework

The exam consists of two partial exams. The grade of the midterm test counts for 30% and the grade of the final exam counts for 70% of the final grade.

By handing in homework (optional!) a bonus of 0.5 maximum can be earned that will be added to the total grade of the exam. This bonus is only given if the total grade of the exam is at least 5.5.

In the same academic year a retake exam will be organised. This will be in the form of a single exam about the entire course matter. The homework bonus grade and the partial grades are not valid for the retake.

• Enrolment for the fall opens in July

• Enrolment for the spring opens in December

• Not being enrolled for an exam/resit means that you are not allowed to participate in the exam/resit.

Remarks

Students who are doing a double propedeuse Natuurkunde met Wiskunde or Sterrenkunde met Wiskunde, take the course Analyse 1 with Mathematics.

Software
Starting from the 2024/2025 academic year, the Faculty of Science will use the software distribution platform Academic Software. Through this platform, you can access the software needed for specific courses in your studies. For some software, your laptop must meet certain system requirements, which will be specified with the software. It is important to install the software before the start of the course.
