Metabolomics

Course
2024-2025

Admission requirements

Advice: Participants should have basic knowledge of Systems Biology, Natural Products or a similar course.

Description

Metabolomics has become an important metabolic profiling tool in life sciences, including studies of metabolic profiling, functional genomics, uncovering biological and physiological phenomenon in chemistry, and interaction between organisms. This course will cover basic natural product chemistry, analytical platforms for metabolomics (NMR, Chromatography, Mass Spectrometry), data interpretation with Multivariate Data Analysis, and example of application of metabolomics to life science. There are three parts of the course: 1) theoretical with the lectures given by international lecturers, 2) practice to learn a workflow of metabolomics and data mining, 3) warp-up: identification of metabolites by spectroscopic data.

Course objectives

At the end of the course students are able to:
1) Describe and explain the concept of metabolomics and compared with that of conventional metabolic studies.
2) Recognize the source of natural products and their characteristics in metabolome.
3) Understand the role of metabolomics in systems biology.
4) Understand the basic of analytical platforms used in metabolomics.
5) Describe the basic of data processing for statistics and multivariate data analysis.
6) Understand the basic of multivariate data analysis in metabolomics.
7) Describe and explain general separation and isolation steps in metabolomics.
8) Describe the integration of analytical data for metabolomics.
9) Recognize primary and secondary metabolites of natural products.
10) Recognize chemical characteristics of primary metabolites.

Timetable

Course structure: 1 week for theory, 1 week for practice, 1 week for wrap-up course for structure elucidation, 1 week for self-study, exam.

To access the timetables for all courses and degree programs at Leiden University, please use the [MyTimetable] (https://rooster.universiteitleiden.nl/schedule) tool (login required). Any teaching activities that you have successfully registered for in MyStudyMap will automatically be displayed in MyTimetable. Additionally, any timetables you manually add will be saved and shown the next time you log in.

MyTimetable offers the convenience of integrating your timetable with popular calendar apps such as Outlook, Google Calendar, Apple Calendar, and other smartphone calendar apps. Any changes made to the timetable will be automatically synced with your calendar. If desired, you can enable email notifications for timetable changes in the "Settings" section (after logging in).

For more information, please watch the instructional video or visit the "help-page" within MyTimetable. Note that Joint Degree students from Leiden/Delft will need to merge their two separate timetables into one. A video tutorial is available to guide you through the merging process.

Mode of instruction

Lectures, practice, reading of articles

Assessment method

Written examination (date will be decided during the course)
The final grade is based on:

  • Written exam, to cover all the lectures: 70%

  • Attendance: 30%

Minimum grade:
Courses require a minimum, unrounded 5.5 grade to complete.

If a course has 2 or more written partial exams, the minimum grade only applies to the weighted average of the exams.
For partial grades from components other than exams (e.g. practicals, seminars, writing assignments), the bottom grade does apply to the individual components.

Please refer to the Student Charter for an overview of regulations.

Reading list

Basic reading list will be provided 3 months before the course.

Registration

All students have to register for courses with the enrollment tool MyStudyMap. There are two registration periods per year: registration for the fall semester opens in July and registration for the spring semester opens in December. Please see this page for more information.

Please note that it is compulsory to preregister your participation for every exam and retake. Not being registered for a course means that you are not allowed to participate in the final exam of the course.
Extensive FAQ's on MyStudymap can be found here.

Remarks

Maximum capacity: 30 students.
Your registration is not complete if you have not registered for all course components available in MyStudymap (exam, lecture, etc.).

This course is a part of an international workshop (Metabolomics Workshop) organized by Y.H. Choi and R. Verpoorte since 2008. The participants will join together with international participants. For the lectures of metabolomics, 8-10 international guest lecturers will be invited. There is limitation of place for the students of Leiden University (ca. 30 places are available). The course will take place in Sylvius building.
