Admission Requirements

This course is available only for students in the minor Sustainable Chemistry and Biotechnology

Description

The students will address a sustainability problem of choice in small groups. They will define the topic themselves, find literature to give a qualitative and quantitative description of the problem and critically discuss one or more possible solutions. The group project runs over the full length of the minor and also trains the students on transferable skills such as teamwork, leadership, critical thinking and oral and written communication. The assessment is based on presentations, reports and discussions with the other student groups

Course Objectives

At the end of the course students:

  • can evaluate a potential sustainable solution to a chemistry and/or biotechnology problem

  • demonstrate a capacity to collaborate in interdisciplinary and contribute to a shared goal

  • demonstrate a capacity to lead and manage change through collaboration with others

  • can report and reflect on research findings in written and verbal forms

  • understand the process of designing a research project from its inception to the final product

Assessment Method

The final grade for the course is established by determining the weighted average. There is no opportunity to re-take the exam.

1) Group presentation (individual grade 30%)
2) Report (30%) (including the minutes of the group meetings (handed in per period), from which it should be clear how the group dealt with feedback, (missing) milestones, setbacks, etc)
3) Peer feedback (20%)
4) Self-assessment (20%) (Questionnaires/assessment forms filled in by individual student related to his/her function in the progress of the group handed in per period

Software
Starting from the 2024/2025 academic year, the Faculty of Science will use the software distribution platform Academic Software. Through this platform, you can access the software needed for specific courses in your studies. For some software, your laptop must meet certain system requirements, which will be specified with the software. It is important to install the software before the start of the course. More information about the laptop requirements can be found on the student website.
