Description
The students will be introduced into educational theory and research methods in education. Students will develop educational skills and teach 1th year students. The course will start with a crash-course into the theoretical and practical background of peer teaching and (bio)medical education. Therefrom, students will start attending workgroups of the first year of biomedical sciences or medicine to observe other teachers, followed by teaching small groups themselves. Coaching and help is provided for. Students will participate in an educational science research project and write a scientific research proposal. Students who successfully complete this course can apply for the STOK (STudent Onderwijs Kwalificatie) program. Furthermore some techniques will be practiced to help students cope with stress related to teaching or work/study in general.
Course objectives
Upon completion of this course:
students can apply theory of learning and teaching when preparing, performing and evaluating medical education in small group learning (Communicator, Scholar),
students can explain learning and student group dynamics using theories of social sciences and medical sciences (Scholar, Communicator, Health Advocate),
students can evaluate learning situations and consider solutions (Professional, Collaborator).
students can write a research proposal for research of educational problems and questions (Academic)
students will have tools to be more resilient to study- and work related stress

It will be announced in MyTimeTable and/or Brightspace when and how the post-exam feedback will be organized.
Mode of instruction
Group work and group discussion, self-study, observations, practical’s, and debates, excursions.
Assessment method
Observation report of workgroup activities
Reflection reports on teaching activities
Written test to assess literature plus composition of a new test for next year or another program
Evaluation of your small group teaching skills, using a rubric that contains well defined criteria
Research proposal paper
(Poster) presentation of research proposal paper
Additional assessment, to be decided together with the students (only pass/fail, no grading)
Attendance
Attendance and participation is obligatory.
Re-examinations
In the case of insufficient scores for any of the assessment tasks, a new assessment will be organized
