The Tutoring and Career Orientation programme (PPP / MMM) runs throughout the entire bachelor’s programme. In the second year, the focus is on making choices and mapping out your own study careers. The following questions and topics are central to the second year:
Orientation on options within the study programme: Which region do you want to learn more about? Which themes do you find interesting?
Orientation on elective courses: What options are available? How can you choose elective courses that fit your personal interests and goals?
Orientation on internships: Do you wish to do an internship? How and where can you gain work experience? How do you apply for an internship?
Orientation on studying abroad: Do you wish to study abroad? How does the application process work?
Orientation on the labour market: What is the value of anthropology in the labour market? Where do anthropologists work? How do you envision your future career? What can you offer an employer? How do you present yourself to the labour market?
Course Objectives
Central to the Tutoring and Career Orientation programme are the questions "Who am I?", "What do I want?", "What are my competences?" and "How do I achieve my goals?". More specifically, the objectives of the second-year Tutoring and Career Orientation programme are as follows:
you will be able to take responsibility for your own personal and professional development;
you will be able to make conscious study choices that are in line with your personal competencies and wishes;
you will be able to gain insight into the connections between the knowledge, skills and experiences you gain from the bachelor’s programme and the possibilities and wishes you have for your future professional career;
you will have (further) familiarised yourself with the labour market for anthropologists;
you will have gained and practised application skills, such as networking; creating a good CV; writing an application letter, and attending a job interview.
Mode of Instruction
We organise two mandatory plenary meetings that focus on choices and possibilities in the second and third year of your studies, reflection on your anthropological and transferable skills, and labour market orientation. All students are expected to complete preparatory and in-class assignments for these meetings.
In addition, you are encouraged to use the POPcorner and Career Services FSW for further study and career support and extra-curricular activities.
Keep an eye on the workshops and events calendar, the LU Career Service, FSW Career Service and CADS Facebook page, and announcements in our Brightspace CADS Study & Career module.
You can use the Career Planning Module to find out more about steps you can take towards personal development and building up your CV.
Schedule:
Autumn: Plenary meeting on choices to be made in the second and the third year: regional and thematic electives, and the possibility of studying abroad, doing a minor or an internship. Attendance is mandatory.
Spring: Plenary meeting in which you will look ahead to the second half of the third year and beyond: introducing the anthropological and sociological exploration courses, the process of writing a thesis, and several options for after your bachelor. Attendance is mandatory.
Various extra-curricular activities are offered with regard to study skills and career orientation (for specific resources see above: ‘Mode of Instruction’).
