Anatolian Languages: Hittite and Luwian

Description

Hittite is the language of the Hittite Empire that ruled over large parts of Anatolia and Syria from 1650-1200 BC. It is attested in some 30,000 pieces of clay tablet excavated in the Hittite capital Hattusa. It is the oldest attested Indo-European language.
Hieroglyphic Luwian is a sister language of Hittite, written in an indigenous hieroglyphic script and attested from ca. 1400-700 BC in Anatolia and North Syria.
In this course the student will learn these two Anatolian languages. Hittite will be taught in Latin transliteration, whereas Hieroglyphic Luwian will be studied in the hieroglyphic script.

Course objectives

At the end of the course, the student will have a basic reading competence in Hittite and Hieroglyphic Luwian, and will be able, with the help of grammar and dictionary, to independently translate basic texts in these two languages..

Mode of instruction

Students are required to sit in on the weekly seminars of the BA course Hittite. Next to that, the students are expected to study Hieroglyphic Luwian on the basis of self study in combination with three sessions (date and time to be determined together with the students) dedicated to Hieroglyphic Luwian.

Assessment method

Written examination, with two components, one on Hittite and one on Hieroglyphic Luwian, both counting for 50% of the final grade.

Weighing

To pass the course, the final grade must be 5.5 or higher.

Resit

Students who fail the exam are allowed to make a resit exam.

Inspection and feedback

How and when an exam review will take place will be disclosed together with the publication of the exam results at the latest. If a student requests a review within 30 days after publication of the exam results, an exam review will be organized.
