Indo-European linguistics II (Verb)

Admission requirements

Familiarity with Indo-European phonology is required, e.g. by completing the course Indo-European Phonology or Indo-European Linguistics I. Familiarity with Indo-European nominal morphology as treated in the course Indo-European Linguistics II (Noun) is recommended. In case of doubt, please contact the teacher.

Description

This course is a continuation of and builds on Indo-European Linguistics I and II (Noun). We will treat the different categories of the Indo-European verb and the corresponding stems and endings. Topics include the thematic present, modal categories, and the perfect, middle and stative.

Course objectives

  • Knowledge of the morphological system of the Proto-Indo-European verb, including the categories and paradigms.

  • Knowledge of the developments of this system in the main daughter languages.

  • Insight into the methodology of the reconstruction of Proto-Indo-European verbal morphology and its pitfalls.

  • Application of the principles of reconstruction.

  • Practise in analysing, discussing and evaluating academic articles in the topic of Indo-European verbal morphology.

Mode of instruction

  • Seminar

Assessment method

A mid-term exam; a written assignment; and a final written examination with short open questions.

Weighing

The mid-term exams counts for 20%; the written assignment for 20%; and the final exam counts for 60% of the final mark.

Resit

There is one resit option for the mid-term exam and the final exam together (80% of the final mark).

Inspection and feedback

If a student requests a review within 30 days after publication of the exam results, an exam review will be organized.
