Familiarity with Indo-European phonology is required, e.g. by completing the course Indo-European
Phonology or Indo-European Linguistics 1. In case of doubt, please contact the teacher.

Description

This course is a continuation of and builds on Indo-European Linguistics 1. We will treat the structure of the Indo-European word and study the reconstruction of nominal endings and paradigms, with a focus on the relation between lexical accent and ablaut. Special topics are the categories gender and number in Indo-European, nominal composition, and derivation. We will conclude with a reconstruction of the pronominal system.

Course objectives

  • Knowledge of the morphological system of the Proto-Indo-European noun and pronoun, including the categories and paradigms

  • Knowledge of the developments of this system in the main daughter languages.

  • Insight into the methodology of the reconstruction of Proto-Indo-European morphology and its pitfalls.

  • Application of the principles of reconstruction.

  • Written examination with short open questions 70%, paper 30%

Resit

There is a resit option.

Inspection and feedback

How and when an exam review will take place will be disclosed together with the publication of the exam results at the latest. If a student requests a review within 30 days after publication of the exam results, an exam review will be organized.
