Admission requirements

Students should be sufficiently proficient in English and Dutch. This course is part of the premaster Translation and cannot be taken separately.

Description

The aim of this premaster course is to familiarize its participants with the practice of doing an annotated translation. Students will learn how to do a source text analysis and justify their translation decisions in the form of annotations. There will be one written examination at the end of the course in the form of an annotated translation English to Dutch, with an accompanying analysis and annotations in appropriate academic Dutch.

Course objectives

  • Analyse a source document, identify potential linguistic and cultural difficulties and assess the strategies and resources needed to reformulate it in line with communicative and cultural needs.

  • Write a source text analysis and annotations and report them in appropriate academic Dutch.

  • Translate a reasonably complex English text that does not contain specialist information or terminology into grammatically and stylistically correct Dutch.

  • Translate different types of material on and for different kinds of media and target audiences, using appropriate tools and techniques (including machine translation).

  • Check, review, revise and evaluate their own work and that of others according to standard or work-specific quality objectives and assess the appropriateness of using tools for the work at hand.

  • Continuously self-evaluate, update and develop competences and skills through personal strategies.
