Description
Activities in cyberspace always have a legal dimension. A comprehensive understanding of cyber security issues requires basic knowledge and understanding of how legal rights and constraints currently operate in cyberspace and the different laws and regulations governing this area. Knowledge of how the regulation is implemented and the challenges and opportunities in their application so that core human values may flourish in the digital domain also becomes important.
For this, it becomes helpful to develop (1) basic knowledge of the functions of law and its institutional arrangements operating within the Dutch society, in the EU and on a global scale; (2) broad overview of the national and international legal systems involved in cyber security issues; (3) knowledge of the legal frameworks and key provisions with respect to core themes such as privacy/data protection and cybercrime; (4) familiarity with the legal frameworks and key provisions with respect to relevant themes such as information security and trusted third parties; and (5) a firm understanding of the intricacies of balancing different, potentially clashing risks and interests such as freedom of information (including the right to open data) and the right to privacy as these arise in the global sphere of cyberspace.
