Description
The alternative internship module is formally conducted in the Institute of Security and Global Affairs (ISGA) and focuses on international organizations and global governance. It is an alternative to the regular internship module and has a very explicit research focus.
The internship will be conducted during the fourth block of the first year of the MIRD programme; the minimum requirement is 10 weeks (full time).
Course objectives
The alternative internship aims to familiarise students with the work of an institute that is conducting activities in the domain of international relations or diplomacy. It draws students into ongoing research activities and projects, with the aim to produce (co-authored) publications.
The ‘alternative internship’ will allow students to build their professional networks and partially learn more about possible career paths (as the focus of their work will notably be on international, regional and non-governmental organisations). The module will offer research-oriented tasks that help create insights into and links with relevant (international) organisations.

Mode of instruction
Students actively engage with the work of ISGA as part of the Faculty of Governance and Global Affairs (FGGA) by conducting this research-led, alternative internship. Parts of the module will be conducted in teams and others individually. For the practical part of the MIRD internship, the following documents have to be drawn up:
Internship agreement between the student, University and the receiving organisation
Internship plan between the student and the University
Internship report
Assessment form by the internship supervisor
Study Load:
10 EC.
To complete the 15 EC workload in this block, students can do the internship research paper, or another elective course of the programme.
Attendance Policy
Attendance is mandatory, subject to course structure (see syllabus for details).
Assessment method
The alternative internship (10 ECTS) is graded as pass/fail, based on an assessment of the internship organisation supervisor (pass/fail) and your internship report (pass/fail).
The following documents need to be submitted:
Assessment form: written by the internship supervisor of the internship organisation.
Internship report: This report is approximately 1500 words in length. The internship report consists of the following elements: * Description of the internship, i.e. the type and aims of the organisation worked and researched for, the various activities the internship entailed, and the relevance of such activities for the work of the organisation at large. The focus is broadly on international organizations and global governance. * Reflection on the internship in light of the academic study conducted in the context of international relations and diplomacy.
Details for submitting papers (deadlines) are posted on Brightspace. If you fail to submit all of the required internship documents, you will fail the course.

Remarks
Based on the alternative internship module, the students can also write an Internship Research Paper, which will be graded (5 ECTS).
The normal study load for this block is 15 ects, which can be achieved through either:
10 ECTS internship + 5 ECTS Internship Research Paper or
10 ECTS internship alternative module + 5 ECTS Internship Research Paper or 15 ECTS internship
