Entry requirements
Only open to Master’s students in Psychology with a specialisation in either Economic and Consumer Psychology or Social and Organisational Psychology.
Note that this course runs twice a year (in Semester 1 and Semester 2)
Description
The professional workfield calls on knowledge and skills with regard to:
translating questions from the field into testible research questions;
interpreting knowledge gained from research;
and communicating findings to various parties.
This course is aimed at developing exactly these academic insights and skills that are essential to students’ professional careers (i.e., in research, policy, and advice). These skills are also directly applicable in the Master programme, such as during thesis and internship projects.
For each skill, students will work on cases from economic and consumer / social and organisational psychology, using a blended learning approach. Supported by knowledge clips and reading materials, students will prepare input for interactive workgroups where students will receive feedback to further improve their skills. The course will span two blocks in the first semester of the Master programme. At the end of each block, students hand in a report in which the acquired skills are applied to a specific case within their field of study.
Course objectives
On completion of the course, the students can:
1. Identify whether interventions effectively address the core issue at hand.
2. Translate concepts into measurable variables and a suitable research design.
3. Interpret data critically and with integrity.
4. Write an appealing and well-structured evidence-based outline.
5. Communicate effectively with people from a different cultural and/or disciplinary background.
6. Understand the ethical aspects of professional conduct, with regard to research, policy, and advice.
