Ziel des Kurses ist es, zu erforschen, wie Deutsch in den Niederlanden verwendet und wahrgenommen wird, und gleichzeitig dazu beizutragen, dass Deutsch in der Öffentlichkeit besser wahrgenommen wird. Im Mittelpunkt des Seminars steht die soziolinguistische Feldforschung in Form von Interviews über die Sprachpraktiken und -ideologien der deutschsprachigen Gemeinschaften in Leiden und Den Haag—eine übersehene Population trotz der Nähe der benachbarten deutschsprachigen Länder und früherer Studien über z. B. Englisch in den Niederlanden (Edwards 2016). Der Kurs basiert auf der aktiven Teilnahme der Studierenden an einem von ihnen geleiteten Forschungsprojekt. Die Teilnahme an diesem Kurs setzt die Bereitschaft voraus, aktiv nach Deutschsprachigen in Leiden und Den Haag zu suchen, Interviews zu führen und die Daten zu transkribieren und zu analysieren.

The course aims at exploring how German is used and perceived in the Netherlands while contributing to making German more visible to the public. At the core of the course is sociolinguistic fieldwork in the form of interviews on the language practices of ideologies of the German-speaking communities in Leiden and The Hague—an overlooked population despite the closeness of neighboring German-speaking countries and previous studies on e.g. English in the Netherlands (Edwards 2016). The course relies on the active participation of the students in a research project led by them. Taking this class involves being ready to actively look for German speakers in Leiden and The Hague, conducting interviews, and transcribing and analyzing the data.

Am Ende dieses Seminars verfügen die Teilnehmenden über:
Kenntnisse der verschiedenen Varietäten des Deutschen;
ein kritisches Verständnis der wichtigsten Konzepte und Methoden der Soziolinguistik;
Tools, um ihre eigenen Spracheinstellungen zu reflektieren und ggf. zu hinterfragen;
die Fähigkeit, ihr eigenes kleines Forschungsprojekt in Soziolinguistik durchzuführen, inklusive Datenerhebung und -analyse;
die Fähigkeit, Lektüre und deren Forschungsergebnisse mündlich und schriftlich in (akademischem) Deutsch zu präsentieren.
Course learning objectives:
By the end of this course, students will have:
knowledge of different varieties of German;
a critical understanding of the main concepts and methods in sociolinguistics;
tools to reflect on and, if necessary, challenge their own language attitudes;
the ability to conduct a small-scale research project in sociolinguistics, including data collection and analysis;
the ability to present readings and their research results orally and in written form in (academic) German.
Students in the MA-education programme are able to reflect on the relevance of their topic for the German secondary classroom.

Students in the two-year teaching MA are able to concretize how their research paper topic can be put to use in secondary schools.

The final mark for the course is established by determining the weighted average. To pass the course, the weighted average of the partial grades must be 5.5 or higher.
Resit
Die Transkription der Interviews und die Hausarbeit müssen ausreichend sein und dürfen wiederholt werden.
Inspection and feedback
How and when an exam review will take place will be disclosed together with the publication of the exam results at the latest. If a student requests a review within 30 days after publication of the exam results, an exam review will have to be organized.
