Admission requirements
Only for students of the MA Asian Studies: Chinese Studies.
Students will only be allowed to attend the Year in China after passing the following courses:
Introduction to Asian Studies
Advanced Mandarin 1
Description
Students spend a total of one year at Shandong University (Jinan, People’s Republic of China) as part of their Master program.
The focus of the year at Shandong University is on language acquisition, in order to obtain at least HSK level 5 upon returning to Leiden.
During their year in China, the students are also expected to do preparatory research for their Master Thesis.
Course objectives
Advance the student’s Mandarin Chinese language proficiency through intensive practice of oral, aural, reading and writing skills.

Assessment method
Assessment and weighing
After completion of the courses, the official transcripts of Shandong University have to be sent to the Board of Examiners of Asian Studies.
Resit
Study abroad cannot be retaken. In case of unforeseen circumstances the exam committee and the programme may offer alternatives if possible.
Inspection and feedback
How and when an exam review will take place will be disclosed together with the publication of the exam results at the latest. If a student requests a review within 30 days after publication of the exam results, an exam review will be organized.
