Individual research project
Objectives
Following the successful completion of the taught courses of the programme, students are required to submit a thesis on a topic of their choice. It must address and analyse an issue of European and/or international human rights law and include a comparative element. The latter means it has to engage at least two different human rights law systems or elements thereof. More specifically the thesis should
*show the student’s ability to conduct academically sound research on a topic in the area of European and/or international human rights law including a comparative element;
*show the student’s ability to investigate and present relatively new and innovative findings; the thesis should not be merely descriptive;
*show the student’s ability to present the findings of this research in writing in a clear and structured way.
Mode of instruction
September: Info Session; first insights into the thesis project
November: First Thesis Workshop
January: Second Thesis Workshop
March: Individual meetings with all students;
April: approval of the thesis proposals
-April-July: Writing the Thesis, under the supervision of a member of the academic staff
-July: Final Submission
Assessment method
Assessment method(s) and the weighting of each form of assessment towards the final grade.
Thesis 100%
The thesis will be assessed by the thesis supervisor and a second reader. To this end they will use standard evaluation forms. In addition to being involved in the assessment of each individual thesis, the second reader (a role usually performed by the programme director and the academic coordinator) will also ensure consistency in grading among the theses submitted in the context of the programme as a whole.
