Description

The emergence of popular culture and literature in France is often associated with 19th-century mass production, which created short, thrilling stories that were disseminated in newspapers and cheap magazines across the country.
However, stories were shared long before, that could be described as popular as they were aimed at the greatest number or were propagated or even imagined by the folk.
These include stories such as the ones of Melusine, Cinderella and Robinson Crusoe, as well as children's tales, fables and folk legends. How did these stories come to be known in France, and sometimes even in Europe, and how have they survived through history?
In this course, we will examine various definitions of popular literature and culture, and apply them to the period from the late 16th to the mid-19th century. We will explore various stories that shaped French culture before 1850, and determine their target audiences, modes of dissemination and variations through centuries.
