The learning brain

Course
2025-2026

Description

Psychologists have come up with many proposals for how learning might work.
Teachers have many a lot of experience with what seems to work. The aim for
Educational Neuroscience is to figure out how learning actually works in the brain. If
we understand the mechanisms of learning we can optimize teaching.
In recent years neuroscientific findings have forced us to reconsider our assumptions
about how the brain learns and what this means for the way we shape education.
This course introduces you to developmental cognitive neuroscience and it’s
research methods. Different topics in the order of our brain’s priorities will be
covered; processing sensory information and moving our bodies, processing
emotions and dealing with other people, thinking, learning – and why this is so
difficult. In addition we will discuss implications for teaching practice, neuromyths,
and individual differences.

Course objectives

After this course students are able to:

  • critically evaluate (neuro)scientific findings;

  • explain the development of emotional, social and cognitive aspects of learning;

  • explain individual- and developmental differences in learning;

  • identify the cognitive and neurobiological aspects of learning;

  • recognise and refute neuromyths;

  • read and understand recent scientific papers from the field of educational
    neuroscience.
