Course
2025-2026

Admission requirements

Only students who have started their Bachelor in 2024-2025 and have successfully completed all BA1 Koreastudies courses are eligible for this course.

Description

This course is an elective language course for which students attend an intensive Korean language program at Seoul National University. This course has significantly higher class hours than other language courses of Korean Studies program and require students to spend a considerable amount of time self-studying for preparation and revision everyday. In this course, students develop their speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills through an integrated approach. Students are expected to reach Level 3 proficiency after 4 hours of classes per day, 5 days a week, for 10 weeks. Through this study abroad program, students are expected to make substantial and fast progress in linguistic competence (overall proficiency, grammar, lexis, oral-aural skills and fluency), in sociolinguistic competence (sensitivity to social conventions), and in pragmatic competence (functional use of linguistic resources).

*It should be noted that this course is not a compulsory. Students with special circumstances or/and concern for heavy workload or living abroad are advised to consider taking ‘Korean 3’ instead on Leiden campus.

Course objectives

This course aims to develop communication skills necessary for daily social activities and to provide opportunities to experience Korean culture.

  • Through hands-on activities like Korean cooking classes, visits to cultural facilities, and poetry appreciation, learners will deepen their understanding of Korean culture.

Assessment method

Grade conversion

To pass this course, students must obtain a Level 3 or higher proficiency certificate from Seoul National University, which requires:

  • a final overall grade of 7.0 or above, and

  • an attendance rate of at least 80 percent.

However, students who do not receive the certificate can still pass the course if they:

  • score 6.0 or higher in each of the four skills (reading, listening, writing, and speaking), and

  • meet the attendance requirement in accordance with Seoul National University standards.

In this case, students will still pass the course but will not be eligible to receive the official certificate from Seoul National University.

Resit

Students who do not receive the Seoul National University certificate but have scored 6.0 or higher in all four skills do not need to take a resit and will be considered to have passed the course.

Students who have not received the certificate and have scored below 6.0 in any of the four skills may take a resit for only those specific skills in Leiden in January.

  • Skills in which a student has already scored 6.0 or higher cannot be retaken.

  • Students will pass the course if they achieve 6.0 or higher in the resit(s).
