Description

This course examines the social, religious, and artistic functions of art forms in China, covering the period from the Bronze Age to contemporary times. With the emergence of new media, styles, and technologies, images and objects served as vehicles for social claims as well as personal expressions, leading to the formation of art historical discourses. Course topics examine the relationship between word and image, ritual art, political agendas of artworks, the indigenization of religious arts, the agency of artists, socioeconomic structures for art production, and cross-cultural exchange through artworks. Additionally, this course will incorporate hands-on experiences with objects, experiments with art materials, as well as visits to the library and museum collections.

Course objectives

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  • Become familiar with major artifacts/sites and the social contexts in which they were produced;

  • Identify basic themes, media, and art practices in Chinese visual and material culture;

  • Develop a sense of artistic and cultural exchanges and appropriation across regions and traditions;

  • Apply effective methodological approaches to analyze topics of interest and formulate clear and coherent arguments.

The final mark for the course is established by determining the weighted average. To pass the course, the weighted average of the partial grades must be 5.5 or higher.

Resit

A resit will only be allowed for the final essay.

Only if the total weighted average is 5.49 or lower and this is the result of the final essay graded 5.49 or lower, a resit of the final essay is possible. The deadline for the resit version will be determined by the course instructor, after consultation with the student. A resit for other course components is not possible.

Inspection and feedback

How and when an exam review will take place will be disclosed together with the publication of the exam results at the latest. If a student requests a review within 30 days after publication of the exam results, an exam review will have to be organized.
