Description
Coptic sources offer a unique perspective on the Mediterranean world in a period of great political, social and religious transformations, roughly between 300 and 1000 AD. The aim of this seminar is to read various genres of Coptic non-literary texts in different variaties of the language. The texts will be read from original sources as found in excavations and in museum collections, such as inscriptions, graffiti, papyri and ostraca (potsherds). The students each present two types of texts written on different materials during class, give feedback to eachother’s texts, and incorporate the feedback in two papers in the form of text editions.
Course objectives
Knowledge and insights:
good working knowledge of non-literary Coptic in various dialects,
knowledge of the printed and digital resources to be used for making Coptic text editions,
insight in the structure and contents of Coptic texts editions,
insight in the historical and cultural context of Coptic documentary texts.
Skills:decipher Coptic texts in the original handwriting,
detect and solve problems of reading, translation and interpretation,
presentation of a text including its problems,
participate in the discussion of and provide constructive feedback to others and to evaluate the value of such feedback on one’s own work and incorporate it,
write a text edition following scholarly conventions.

The requirements for MA and ResMA students are differentiated: ResMA students are expected to produce a final edition of (close to) publishable quality; MA students are expected to produce a final edition with all required elements based on existing literature.
Weighing
The final grade for the course is established by determining the weighted average.
Resit
Should the overall mark be unsatisfactory, written paper(s) can be revised after consultation with the instructor.
Exam review
Students are welcome to discuss their papers individually with one of the instructor(s), as soon as the results have been published.
