Admission requirements

MSc Chemistry students from Leiden University (UL) or from the University of Amsterdam / Free University (UvA/VU) who are enrolled in the Class of Excellence of the Holland Research School of Molecular Chemistry (HRSMC). Before the start of the short rotation, the student has attended the mandatory safety instructions, including a fire fighting practical instruction.

Description

The short rotation allows the student to master the principles of chemical research in practice. During the short rotation, the student works on a small research project within a research group. The project is concluded with a written report and presentation for the research group. The short rotation is a minimum of 6 EC.

For MSc students from MSc Chemistry at Leiden university:
Short rotations of a minimum of 6 EC at UL, UvA or VU will be listed extracurricularly. Rotations of 20 EC or more are considered as minor research projects (4423RPVAR) and are listed on the diploma as curricular component. Minor research projects at the UvA or VU are guided by an internal supervisor at the LIC and an external supervisor at the host institute. Prior permission from the Board of Examiners is required for a 20 EC minor research project outside the LIC. A minor research project can only be started after the major research project has been completed including a Thesis Talk.

For guest students from MSc Chemistry at UvA/VU:
Short rotations of a minimum of 6 EC at UL will be listed extracurricularly.

Course objectives

At the end of the Short Rotation the student is able to:

  • Plan and prepare their own research experiment.

  • Work safely and effectively in a research team.

  • Collect and analyse research data.

  • Present their findings in a clear and structured written report.

  • Discuss their own data with respect to the relevant scientific literature.

Practical work or computer work, literature search, self-study, training in reporting, discussions and presentations.

Assessment method

The final assessment is based on:

  • Observation of practical work, analysis of results, attitude, independence and creativity

  • Evaluation of a written thesis about the practical work

  • Evaluation of an oral presentation

Registration

There is no registration procedure for this course. Students arrange their own internship agreement with a staff member.
