The course offers an introduction into Greek and Latin epigraphy (the study of inscriptions).

Lectures, combined with two written assignments which will be discussed plenary.

Leerdoelen

Understanding of the contribution of inscriptions to all aspects of ancient life, their limits and problems when used as a historical source.
Knowledge of the use of inscriptions in ancient society (literacy, epigraphic habit, symbolic writing).Practical handling of inscriptions: how to find texts, decipherment, squeezes, publication.

Written examination on the contents of the lectures and the literature; the assignments will count as parts of this examination

Overzicht

Part one (5 weeks): definition, bibliography, inscriptions within the ancient world, the epigraphic praxis.
Part two (4 weeks): inscriptions as historical source from the archaic Greek period to the late Roman empire; Greek and Latin writing.Part three (4 weeks): the contribution of different types of inscriptions to the knowledge of ancient religion, city life, slavery, army etc.

Opmerkingen

Knowledge of Greek and Latin is not required.
