Colonial transitions in Asia 1780 – 1830: the formation of the Netherlands East Indies in perspective

Course
2008-2009

Between 1780 and 1830 the Asian-European relationship entered a new era, which would ultimately lead to full-blown Western imperialism. The course of the transition from the various mercantile possessions into centralized, state-run colonies was complex. Although historians now tend to take the outcome for granted, most Dutch officials in Asia and the Netherlands at the time actually did not know where they were heading.
In this seminar we will analyse how worldwide trends, local Asian pressures, European relations and Dutch domestic developments contributed to the particular shape of the Netherlands East Indies and to the colonial state formation in the neighbouring territories. The archival collections in the National Archives and the KITLV in Leiden will be consulted to answer specific research questions.
