In this class three or four guest lecturers, preferably from other (Dutch) universities, appear to present their ongoing research in order to enable the students to get in touch with project taking place outside Leiden. These lectures are prepared by literature study and followed by a critical discussion between the students and the invited guest chaired by the lecturer. On the basis of these lectures the students will do own research on a specific aspect. This research will be presented in class and in written form.
Admission requirements
BA degree (or equivalent) in Archaeology or a relevant discipline.
SAP and exchange students: admission after approval by the Graduate School of Archaeology.

Learning objectives
*Knowledge of current research and debates in Classical Archaeology; *Is able to critically assess current research and literature and voice one’s well-argumented opinion; *Is able to choose a research topic, find relevant literature and present this via a powerpoint presentation and is able to handle a stimulating discussion afterwards; *Is able to write a paper on his/her research topic, with expression of a critical assessment of the literature and one’s own well-argumented opinion, making use of the feedback received with the presentation.
Method of instruction
Lectures, presentation and essay.
Examination
Participation in discussion at guest lectures. The own presentation, presenting a first (oral) draft of the final essay, is used for feedback on form, structure, content etc. The final essay is marked and subsequently discussed.
