The Biography of Monumental Landscapes

Course
2008-2009

During field trip students will discuss the origins, continued use and constant re-articulation of monumental landscapes. The focus will be on theories about the meaning of monuments for the prehistoric societies. The aim of the excursion is also to bring the students in contact with colleagues in other countries and theory research projects. Ideally several of these projects are visited during the excursion. The students organize the excursion and write papers in preparation and evaluation of the field trip.

Course objective

Students learn to ‘read’ and interpret archaeological landscapes in the field.

Learning objectives

*Is able to organize projects and excursions; *Have advanced knowledge of a particular region and is able to write a syllabus for fellow-students about the chosen region; *Is able to analyse sites and monuments in their physical and social context, students can read and interpret archaeological landscapes in the field; *Is able to connect this analysis with possible excavation- and research results; *Advanced knowledge of research practices in international context (site visits versus regional embedded scholars)

Preparation of the trip + guide; evaluation report.
