Child Psychopathology Reconsidered

Course
2008-2009

Deviant psychological development during childhood and adolescence expresses itself most clearly in individuals suffering from some kind of psychopathology. For this reason scientific data obtained in diverse populations of children and adolescents with a psychiatric background is regularly published. Not only to shed light on deficits in their own cognitive, neurological and behavioural functioning, but on the development of cognitions, neurological structures, behaviour and the way they interact in general. Consequently, new insights regarding the development of these domains and their role in childhood and adolescent psychopathology evolve rapidly.

During the course, recent scientific work related to ADHD and Anxiety is critically evaluated and used to investigate and discuss the factors underlying these two disorders. During each lecture recent publications related to either ADHD or Anxiety will be presented and discussed by the participants. Based on the presented information and the evaluation regarding its reliability and relevance, conclusions will be formulated in relation to both general and deviant (psychopathological) development. An important issue will be whether the information presented supports or weakens specific theories, which are developed to better understand the etiology of childhood and adolescent psychopathology.
