A comprehensive overview of the grammar of Middle Egyptian, together with an introduction to the basic vocabulary of the language.

This course is not available for A la carte education.

Course objectives

This course provides the fundamental theoretical knowledge necessary for reading hieroglyphic texts of substantial length; thus it lays the groundwork for the course Lectuur Middelegyptisch (EG12LME).

b) R. Faulkner, A Concise Dictionary of Middle Egyptian
(Oxford 1962 of meer recente herdruk).

c) B. G. Ockinga, A_ Concise Grammar of Middle Egyptian_, second, revised edition
(Mainz am Rhein 2005)

2) Reference is regularly made to the following grammars, which may be purchased or consulted in the library:
a) J.P. Allen, Middle Egytian (Cambridge 2000)

b) J.F. Borghouts, Egyptisch. _Een inleiding in taal en schrift van het Middenrijk
_ (Leiden 1993)

c) A. Gardiner, Egyptian Grammar, 3rd edition. (Oxford 1957 of meer recente herdruk)

Examination

A maximum of 4 (out of 39) classes may be missed with good reasons (at the discretion of the instructor).

Grading is based on the following:

· Eight quizzes (testjes) given over the course of the semester (15%).

· One mid-term examination (tussententamen) in Toetsweek A (25%).; no dictionary.

· One final examination (slottentamen) in Toetsweek B (60%); no dictionary.

Students must pass the final examination in order to succesfully complete the course.
