This course develops skills in reading hieroglyphic texts in Old and Middle Egyptian. The texts are exclusively religious; the material for 2008 consists of Pyramid and Coffin Texts found in the New Kingdom tomb of Rekhmire (TT 100). Some secondary literature will also be read and discussed in connection with the primary material.

Course objectives
This course aims to develop the student’s confidence and ability in independently reading hieroglyphic texts.
Required reading
Primary texts and secondary literature, distributed via Blackboard
Examination
-A short, oral presentation (35%) on a Pyramid or Coffin Text.
-An examination (65%) consisting of essay questions on secondary literature and translation and parsing of passages of texts (from in-class readings and texts not read in class). Neither dictionaries nor other aides may be used.
