Many Life Science companies have started with a brilliant idea of a scientist or with a discovery in a university research lab. Eventually, this will lead to new therapies and medicines, new and healthier foods and new, sustainable products, and new and improved production methods. Life Science research has an enormous socio-economic impact, improving the quality of life by providing new insight into, for example, the medical, nutritional and agricultural sciences. Science however will not produce products so life science companies and business are crucial to benefit from this science. This course will focus on the business perspective on science.
This course consists of 2 parts. In the first part we will explore the findings that form the basis of life science companies in Leiden and find out how these findings were important in the development of the company, in the second part we will explore the commercial possibilities for findings from the LUMC/University. This course gives the opportunity to find out more about the master track SBB and will learn how potential for valorization of scientific findings can be assessed.

Part I
In the Bioscience Park in Leiden there are a lot of companies in the life sciences. The purpose of this assignment is to discover the science at the heart of 5 Leiden Life Sciences companies and how this science has been and is being developed into products on the market or in the pipeline.
