Structure elucidation

Course
2008-2009

In the course the various spectrometric methods such as UV, IR, CD, ORD, Mass and NMR spectometry will be dealt with. The emphasis will be on the use of the spectrometric data rather than on the theoretical background of apparatus.

Coordinator

Prof.dr.R.Verpoorte; verpoort@chem.leidenuniv.nl

Methods of instruction

Lectures will be given on the various aspects of the mentioned spectrometric methods. Various structure elucidation problems will be presented to the students asking them to solve these. These will first be on parts of a structure, but at the end some real life examples will be given for doing the structure elucidation.

Application

application form available from www.studiegidsen.leidenuniv.nl > Wiskunde en Natuurwetenschappen > Biologie > Forms > Mastercourses

Course objective

To learn what methods can be used in structure elucidation, and what kind of information can be obtained for identification and/or structure elucidation of an isolated natural product. To learn the student to logically build up the case for a certain structure, considering all possibilities for structural elements and to select NMR-experiments that can be used to exclude or proof certain structural elements.
