This course explores how to do art history in areas outside the West’s common preoccupation with art history in the West. The aim of the course is to make students familiar with a number of topical approaches in art history, and to apply them to various conditions of art, history and society in China, India and Indonesia. The approaches to be stressed concern three main issues: a). definitions of the artist; b). conceptions of artistic canons; c). functional definitions of art
