This course offers a comprehensive introduction to the phonetics and phonology of tones. The first part of the course will provide an overview of various topics in research on tone with an emphasis on Standard Chinese.
During the second part of the course, students will gain hands-on experience of how to conduct research examining aspects of the tonal system of a specific Chinese dialect/language.

Students will:
*sharpen their analytical skills, become familiar with the basic assumptions of the field (i.e. research on tone); *learn experimental methods to address theoretically relevant questions; *and be exposed to open questions in current researches on the phonetics and phonology of tone.
