Objectives of the course
The course is aimed to provide students with an overview of the structure and nature of EU law, both from a procedural as well as a substantive point of view.
Short description of the course
The first part of the course focuses on the institutional structure of the EU with special emphasis on the relationship between the EU and the Member States as well as the judicial protection of rights of individuals in the Community legal order. Furthermore, attention will also be paid to recent developments, such as EU enlargement and its consequences as well as the Treaty of Lisbon.
The course intends to introduce students to the EU legal order and is especially designed for students who do not have sufficient prior knowledge of European Union law or who wish to refresh their knowledge in order to lay the groundwork for the remaining courses. Students will be introduced to the system of case law of the European Court of Justice and will be taught to systematically read and analyse cases as well as legislation of the EU.
