This course extends students’ knowledge of normal and abnormal development from infancy through to adolescence, and simultaneously builds knowledge around the approaches to assessment and intervention for clinical problems arising during this time. Representative problems covered in the course include:
anxiety
autism
attention-deficit / hyperactivity disorder
conduct disorders
delinquency
substance abuse
eating disorders.
The seminars, each conducted by an expert in the topic being addressed, comprise case presentations, general information in relation to specific disorders, scientific developments and trends, issues in society, and discussion. Special emphasis is given to the information required to properly set a diagnosis and the scientific evidence for the effectiveness of different forms of intervention and treatment.

Aim(s)
To develop insight into, and comprehension of the current relevant developments within the field of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
To develop the academic skills necessary for psychologists to both critically and professionally participate in the decision making processes within the field of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.

Additional literature will be provided during the course.
Examination
Exam: open questions regarding literature, discussed topics during lectures and one or two case examples in which a diagnostic or treatment policy has to be formulated. The textbook may be used during the exam.

None. Developmental Psychopatholoy (2nd year) is recommended.

Application
Enrollment for courses of the first semester will take place July 7th 2008 10hr, via U-TWIST. Enrollment for courses of the second semester will take place in January 2009.
NB: Exam registration will take place via U-Twist, and will be open between a month and a week before the (re)exam. Students who don’t register, cannot participate in the exam.
