Deze cursus beoogt dat studenten de verschillende benaderingen ten aanzien van het concept ‘gender’ in de rest van hun studie kunnen toepassen. Dit wil zeggen dat ze het verschil tussen de genders theoretisch leren duiden evenals de sociale constructie en deconstructie van vrouwelijkheid en mannelijkheid en de sociale belichaming daarvan. Verder moeten studenten de concepten van verschil en gelijkheid tussen vrouwen en mannen, maar ook bij vrouwen onderling en mannen onderling kunnen begrijpen en de contexten en aspecten die daaraan ten grondslag liggen. Belangrijk daarbij is om te leren onderkennen hoe al deze aspecten de algemene visie ten aanzien van individuen en samenleving ?de ‘domestieke’ en ‘publieke’ terreinen be?loeden.
Studenten moeten de wijze waarop gender samenhangt met andere concepten zoals etniciteit, klasse, religie, leeftijd, generatie enz. leren onderkennen.
Studenten moeten leren herkennen hoe de relatie tussen lokale en globale ontwikkelingen in relatie tot gender verlopen, b.v.: de wijze waarop mobiliteit (migratie e.d.) en ruimtelijke grenzen gender constructies voortdurend defini?n en her defini?n.
Deze basismodule zal een belangrijke introductie zijn om de gender-aspecten binnen de ori?atiemodulen (en later de specialisaties daarbinnen) te onderscheiden (‘Media Worlds’, ‘Global Connections’ en ‘Development in Place’) .
Deze cursus wil studenten kritisch leren kijken naar besluitvorming en beleid en de theoretische literatuur in relatie tot ‘genderproblematiek’.
